Dr. Diana Wehrell-Grabowski, has been a science educator for the past 28 years, as a classroom teacher, teacher trainer, professional staff development instructor, curriculum specialist, keynote speaker, and university professor.

She has been a featured speaker, keynote speaker, and presenter at over 70 educational conferences. Diana is known for her effective and innovative teaching style, as well as being able to captivate, motivate, and inspire participants during all of her presentations.

Workshop Goal
The emphasis of this course is for participants to experience inquiry-based science instruction. Participants will be actively engaged in conducting inquiry-based science investigations that can help them to visualize what inquiry looks like in a science classroom, enabling them to create and implement inquiry-based science lessons.

Workshop Objectives
Participants will:
  • Increase their science content and pedagogical knowledge, 
  • Develop a true understanding of the nature of science, 
  • Examine the characteristics of inquiry-based science, 
  • Identify what inquiry is and what it is not in the science classroom, 
  • Discover how inquiry may be used to strengthen critical thinking skills, 
  • Explore the use of science reflective journal writing in the classroom, 
  • Conduct scientific inquiry through hands-on investigations, 
  • Modify a “traditional science” lesson to focus on inquiry and the nature of science, and 
  • Develop inquiry-based science lessons to use within the classroom.

Topics Covered: 

  1. What are the essential features of classroom inquiry?
  2. What are the characteristics of inquiry-based science?
  3. What is the student’s role in scientific inquiry?
  4. Questioning techniques to advance inquiry skills in the science classroom.
  5. What is the relationship between inquiry-based science and the scientific method?
  6. Implementing the “scientific process” in science lessons.
  7. How can you use inquiry methods to promote conceptual change and deeper understanding of science?
  8. Promoting inquiry through science reflective journals.
  9. Conducting hands-on-minds-on inquiry-based explorations to investigate the following Science Content Standards:
    • Unifying Concepts and Processes in Science
    • Science as Inquiry
    • Physical Science
    • Life Science
    • Earth and Space Science
    • Science and Technology
    • History and Nature of Science
    • Assessing inquiry learning in science.
