Course Objectives
1. To understand how ICT can support student-centred learning in science.
2. To become familiar with using a variety of ICTs that can support student-centred learning in science.
Course Synopsis Day 1:
The course begins by examining the need for student-centred learning, and looks at ways in which to stimulate students’ interest and motivation. It moves on to consider student centred learning through the use of language, and through assessment. The day finishes by working on lesson planning for student-centred learning. Within each of these areas, we examine how ICT-based activities (incorporating web 2.0, handheld and more conventional technologies) can be used to enhance students’ learning in science.
Day 2:
Having understood the potential value of ICT activities for learning, participants have the opportunity to develop ICT activities of their choice, with individualised support from the course tutor. It is expected that such activities will build upon the lesson planning session on Day 1, and that participants may experiment with devising ICT activities within applications which are both familiar and unfamiliar to them. By the end of the Day 2, participants should have expanded the extent to which they can utilise a variety of technologies in the science classroom, and become competent in using them. These will be predominantly be web-based, although support is available for use of mobile technologies, including iphone and Android apps.
