About the Workshop
During this two-day workshop participants will learn how to bring science to life through popular pre-primary children’s literature. Endless examples of how children’s literature can be used in the classroom to present and reinforce scientific concepts will be shared in a format that is motivating and inquiry-based. Participants will learn how to select fictional and non-fictional books with scientific themes and then develop hands-on minds-on inquiry-based science lessons.

The hands-on explorations will cover concepts in the following science disciplines: Scientific Thinking/Inquiry, Earth & Space Science, Physical Sciences, & Life Science. In addition, math literature and math concepts will be integrated within many of the explorations undertaken during the workshop.

The book list includes fictional and non-fictional books from well-known authors such as: Dr. Seuss, Pfister, Zoehfeld, Gibbons, Frances O’Roark (Phineas L. MacGuire series), Carl Hiaasen, Jean Craighead George, Steve Tomecek, Anthony Fredericks, Roberta Edwards, Robert Byrd, Bonnie Worth and Tish Rabe (authors of new Cat in the Hat Learning Library Series, Ehlert, Himmelman, Lynne Mayer, Tan Hoban, Steve Jenkins, Kimberly Bradley, Alison Inches, Peg Kehlert, Mark Cassino, and others….

Workshop Objectives

  • Present an overview of how children’s fictional literature can be used to teach science in the classroom.
  • Provide participants with information that will prove helpful in the process of selecting children’s fictional and non-fictional books that can be used to teach scientific concepts.
  • Present an overview of selected  fictional and non-fictional literature that can be used in elementary classrooms to teach science concepts and more (language, communication, math, social studies, and the arts).
  • Allow participants to take an active role in conducting a wide-array of hands-on inquiry-based science explorations that will demonstrate specific science concepts and principles described in both fictional and non-fictional books.
  • Provide participants with information and explorations that integrate math, science, reading, social studies, and the arts).
  • Provide participants with information on creating extension explorations specifically related to integrating science and reading.
