About the Workshop
Children have always delighted in playing in the sand, bringing their inner and outer worlds together through imagination. Sand play is a method to help children express the "inexpressible." By adding miniatures to the shelves of the play room and having a sandbox you may start to play and understand the child's inner world. In this one day workshop participants will:
  • Understand the philosophical roots of a mindful use of sand in play therapy.
  • Begin practices to increase immediacy, authenticity, and the skill of clinical witnessing.
  • Practice responding with increased respect, spontaneity, and connection to the client and the sand scene.
  • Develop approaches to tap into one's creative energy, release diminishing stress, and nourish the creative self.

Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:
  1. Define a mindful, centering practice for working in sand and play therapy.
  2. Explore ways to respond to the client, the sand scene, and oneself that will foster immediacy, spontaneity, authenticity, balance, and connection.
  3. Describe the way projection, interpretation, and judgment seep into play therapy and distort and limit work in the sand.
  4. Describe the value of the teacher‘s own sand scenes for more effective play and sand therapy.
